Should you Hire Professional Movers
Time was that when a family moved, a team of family and friends
joined together to move the family's belongings from one home
to another. Then, sometime after the invention of the wheel,
moving homes and offices became a full time occupation for many
enterprising and strong backed individuals. Sure, you can still
pull together your own team of family and friends. With some
careful planning and even more careful movement, your furnishings
and belongings can be moved with few complications. On the other
hand, movers make it just so much easier...
Here
are some suggestions for when you hire a moving company, and
for when you plan to "do it yourself'.
Hiring A Mover
Shop around! Get at least two, and preferably three prices
before you commit. It's a little bit of work, but it gives
you the confidence that you've agreed to the best price. Get
references from your Agent or neighbours!
Be certain that you understand the company's liability and
their policies for addressing damaged or lost items. Ask for
a copy in writing, or to have the policy included in your
contract.
Be clear on the company's billing procedures. Some companies
charge for overtime after a certain maximum, and others charge
on an hourly basis.
There are many reputable and reliable moving companies out
there. You'll find that professionals take the worry, and
the backache, out of your move!
Doing it Yourself
Ensure that you have adequate boxes and a lot of tape. Newspaper,
foam or other packing material is also helpful when preparing
for the move. Keep tape on hand throughout the move.
Take a tape measure and check entrance doors and stairwell
clearance, Confirm that your furniture will fit.
Use a large black marker and label each box with the room
in which it will be placed. Be sure to clearly mark boxes
that contain fragile items, and use an arrow to indicate which
side is up! (t). Good planners will also place a sign on the
doors or walls of rooms in order to identify them to those
who are doing the moving.
Purchase or borrow at least one wheeled dolly.
Have at least 2 wooden or rubber "wedges" and a
supply of bungee cords for holding doors open.
Have a power screwdriver & bits ready and be prepared
to remove doors from their hinges to expedite moving.
Gather as many blankets as possible in order to separate and
protect easily marked surfaces.
